Day 11

Release radar seems to show me recent drops from artists that I am frequently recommended on other playlists. Artists such as SZA and Drake feature on this playlist and it seems that the application is still pushing Alternative Rock and RnB content to the account.

Rap artists such as BBno$ and AJ Tracey were also featured on the playlist which seems to show that the RA is still also recommending me Rap content as well.

Unlike the Discover now playlist, this playlist felt boring and lacked variety with the songs it presented me.

I noticed a playlist called 'Jungle'. Hoping it was a DnB playlist I decided to give it a listen. However, It was actually for an band called 'Jungle' and this playlist also featured RnB artists such as Frank Ocean and SZA. The playlist also recommended me 5 Sabrina carpenter. I am so confused why she is still being recommended to me after I stopped listening to playlists she featured in. Maybe because of how much she appeared in the beginning of this experiment.

After this I let the RA recommend me music for a while and still not much changed. I am frequently getting the same songs and artists day after day. SZA, Frank Ocean, Bryson Tiller. It seems that I most definitely in another filter bubble.

Plans for tomorrow:

Listen to the Fred Again playlist, I believe that this may bring a drastic shift in the content I am being recommended 

Listen to the discover now playlist again, this may suggest to the algorithm that I enjoy am more diverse and fresh feel to the music I listen to. 

Overall:

I am enjoying the amount of fresh faces I am seeing (Or fresh voices I am hearing) while exploring these playlists. However there is never any variety in the types of genres I am being recommended. I respect the RA for listing new artists almost everyday but I still believe a narrowing effect is happening to the account.

My belief that mainstream content is prioritised more so than other content seems to also be proved each day, as artists such as Drake and SZA who are massive are continually being pushed to me.

Day 29 (Success)

My work has payed off and it seems that there are ways to bring new recommendations into your base recommendation pool. Granted this took a lot of time and meant I had to listen to the Happy Hour playlist on repeat. However, we now have three new playlists that include this type of music. This includes: Daylist (Funk Soul Groovy Evening) Daily Mix 2 Martha Reeves and The Vandellas Mix Along with this, It seems the throwback subheading, on the homepage, is experimenting with older music. As I now have a 'Born in The 90s' playlist. Previously, this subheading only contained music that went as far back as the 2000s. This does show, that the diversification tools, that Spotify include in their recommender systems, are able to expand a users music tastes, when given enough historical data. Day 17

I got a chance to look into some different playlists. Today I listened to a playlist caled unwind 00s and it consisted of throwback songs from the past decades. It was a fun experience but it didnt really bring any new genres into the recommendation pool.  The playlist was mostly filled with popular artists from around the 2000s such as Bruno Mars and MGMT.
